From modules to medicines: integrated by design
At Exyte, we are redefining modular construction. Instead of treating it as simply assembling prefabricated boxes, we see it as a smarter, more connected system made up of standardized building blocks that can scale from a single module to entire facilities.
The core principle of our approach is integration. That means, instead of being designed separately, the mechanical, electrical, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC), as well as, process systems we create are all built together from the start and ready for immediate use. This unique approach to Off-Site-Manufacturing (OSM) cuts down on coordination issues, reduces the need for rework on-site, and allows us to build more efficiently.
Take ExyCell® as an example. ExyCell® is a fully integrated cleanroom module designed for biotech and pharmaceutical applications. These modules are not limited to piping racks. They include all critical systems and are engineered for Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) compliance, rapid qualification, and seamless site integration.
ExyCell® adapts to your process layout and equipment choices without locking you into proprietary vendors. Built on a common grid and sized for standard containers, it scales on demand and reduces interfaces, cutting rework and speeding deployment. But the concept goes far beyond ExyCell®.
Our broader modular strategy enables:
- Standardization across disciplines: Modules are designed with a common architectural and process grid that allows for plug-and-play assembly and reduces interface risks.
- Transport efficiency: Modules are dimensioned for standard 12.19 m containers, allowing two units per truck. This minimizes emissions and simplifies logistics.
- Sustainability by design: Off-site prefabrication reduces waste, shortens construction timelines by up to 50 percent, and supports circularity through reconfigurable layouts.
- Scalability and flexibility: From temporary container setups to full-scale greenfield facilities, the same modular logic applies. It’s adaptable to both new builds and retrofits.
Our team has already seen great results from this approach. For example, at the WACKER facility in Halle, which produces messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA), our ExyCell® modules made up most of the cleanroom space and helped deliver one of the fastest greenfield drug substance plants ever built.

We have solved the challenge of interdisciplinary collaboration, not by adding complexity, but by embedding it into the module itself.
