Exyte uses lean methods to optimize Austria’s largest data center project
Exyte’s Global Business Unit Data Centers is currently building the largest data center in Austria for Digital Realty, a major global player in the industry. The project spans 21,000 square meters, developing four data hall buildings and a central administration building. Exyte's scope is the first phase of this campus building, which features a mid-rise data hall building and administration building, with a completion aimed for April 2026.
As part of Exyte’s commitment to operational excellence and the company’s promise to deliver on its clients’ ambitious goals, Exyte employs successful methods such as lean. Lean management in construction ensures an optimized use of resources and overall workflow efficiency. Effective lean management leads to timely project delivery, cost savings, and higher quality outcomes, and fosters a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration among stakeholders.
To ensure operational excellence throughout the project’s life cycle, the project team underwent a lean competency workshop, hosted by Exyte’s lean management experts, Mehdi Tavakol and Arife Cobanbeyli. The workshop covered lean construction philosophy and principles as well as the Last Planner System (LPS) as project implementation method. At Exyte, project teams embrace lean construction and the LPS to meet clients' needs accurately and swiftly. These methods and tools are designed to improve efficiency, reduce waste, and enhance collaboration.
“This strategic approach guarantees a successful project completion while embodying our 'Do it the Exyte Way, do it the successful way' philosophy at every stage. As a result, we not only adhere to deadlines but also deliver projects that set new benchmarks in quality and performance in the construction sector," says Senior Specialist Lean Management, Arife Cobanbeyli.
Shaun Cooper, Senior Vice President Project Delivery, adds, “The use of lean management tools and, more importantly, embracing a lean mindset is a critical element of our overall project delivery strategy. Focusing our collaborative efforts through the right tools on the areas that really matter ensures real clarity and provides the foundational basis for operational excellence.”
Creating positive project outcomes for clients
The lean approach benefits clients by fostering better engagement and cooperation, resulting in a harmonious working environment. “By minimizing waste, creating a learning and improvement atmosphere and reducing the need for reactive problem-solving, lean management ensures that both Exyte and the client can focus on proactive planning and execution,” Cooper says.
