Inside the award-winning construction Safety practices of an Exyte project in Asia
On Exyte projects, safety is always the highest priority. This commitment is exemplified in a recent biopharma project in Asia where Exyte maintained an exceptional safety record. The project team upheld rigorous safety protocols, resulting in zero incidents and lost-time injuries, and was recognized for their performance by both the client and the Exyte-internal Operational Excellence Awards.
Following two near misses in the early project phase, comprehensive corrective actions were implemented to prevent future occurrences, ensuring that safety protocols were rigorously reinforced. The project director, Zhang JunBo, emphasized the importance of learning from near miss occurrences: "We work in a high-risk environment, and there is always an element of danger. That’s why it is so important to learn from experiences and make sure these learnings are not only applied on the project but everywhere. When we spot a potential safety gap, we not only address this within the project team, but it gets communicated through our company channels to make sure the lessons are learned everywhere,” adds Zhang.
How Exyte's training programs keep workers prepared
The safety training program for new employees at Exyte in North-East Asia is tailored to different roles, ensuring that everyone, both office and project site-based roles, receive the necessary safety education. Basic office and site safety training are mandatory for all, with additional construction safety training for managers. Employees in high-risk areas must pass an exam and receive a badge to access these zones. Job-specific training, such as for piping workers, is also mandatory and exceeds state regulations.
"Our training programs are designed to meet the highest standards from day one. We ensure that every worker is well-prepared and understands the importance of safety in their specific role," Zhang comments. Training adheres to both company standards and applicable local regulations, incorporating exams and regular checks to ensure ongoing compliance. This comprehensive approach ensures that all workers, including subcontractors, are adequately trained.
Rigorous inspections and protocols keep the project sites secure
Maintaining compliance with safety standards on-site involves rigorous daily inspections and fire watch protocols. Every activity requires a ready-to-work permit, signed off by Environment Health and Safety (EHS) specialists and construction managers. Safety checklists, welding blankets, fire extinguishers, and fall protection measures are checked daily. Both internal and third-party audits, including unannounced ones, verify compliance with safety protocols.
"We take every precaution to ensure our site is safe. Regular inspections and audits help us maintain the highest safety standards and address any potential issues promptly," Zhang emphasizes.
Celebrating Operational Excellence: The positive effects of recognition
The project won two recognitions from the client, “Best Contractor” and the “Best EPC Award”. Receiving the Exyte-internal Operational Excellence award for safety on top has significantly boosted the team's morale and commitment to operational excellence and safety.
"Whatever we do well, the people are behind it, and behind that is a good system of training. The whole company, from corporate down to every local team, really cares about safety. That’s why these recognitions mean so much to us," Project Director Zhang notes. "Safety is part of our culture. Just as we need food and water, we need to live and work in a safe work environment. Exyte truly cares about its employees' physical and mental health."
Michael Topp, Senior Vice President Operations of Exyte’s Business Unit Biopharma and Life Sciences in North-East Asia, highlights the significance of safety: “Safety is fundamental in project execution. The project’s safety record demonstrates our ongoing commitment to maintaining a safe work environment. We view this as a step in the right direction and will continue to strive for continuous improvement in safety across all our operations.”
