Focus on quality and close subcontractor management as the key to success
Exyte is currently nearing the successful completion of a major semiconductor project in Asia. As the project draws to a close, Project Manager Tao Shi Yong reflects on the team's performance, emphasizing how quality remained the central focus throughout. This commitment earned the team recognition from the client and by receiving the Exyte-internal Operational Excellence Award in the category “Quality”.
The semiconductor project with two fabs and one fiber plant started in September 2023 and finished on schedule with the second fab and the last phase of the fiber plant in April 2025. Exyte was the cleanroom contractor for all three project phases. The client for this project had been working with Exyte in the past and trusted Exyte with the new project because of their positive experiences and Exyte’s reputation in the semiconductor industry. In project execution and beyond, both companies developed a very trusting partnership. “Now we carry out several projects simultaneously, showcasing the strong relationship between the client and Exyte,” says Project Manager Tao.
Throughout the project, the companies developed a trusting relationship and close cooperation to promptly address and resolve quality issues. Quality experts from both sides regularly controlled checklists, ensuring no details were missed, while maintaining flexibility for the project flow. Tao explains Exyte’s approach to quality: “For more work-intensive issues, hundreds of special reports are created, and all efforts are made to demonstrate, pull all information together, share, and collaborate.”
For high-quality work, together works best
Close cooperation and communication with the clients are critical in delivering top-notch quality in all aspects of the design, engineering and construction of their facilities. “For this project, we are grateful to have a supportive client who also values the importance of collaboration. They shared lessons learned, including past quality issues they encountered at their own facilities,” Tao remembers. “This certainly helped us as we could cross-check these findings with our own records and make sure all aspects would be considered right from the start.”
Another key activity for the successful completion was rigid testing of material and equipment through factory acceptance processes. Exyte has a close relationship with equipment and material manufacturers and Exyte personnel visited their factories to ensure quality standards were already met in the manufacturing environment, on top of the regular on-site quality checks.
Managing subcontractors closely
Perhaps the most important practice that Tao identifies for this project’s success is the intensive collaboration with subcontractors. While about two thirds of subcontractors on the project worked with Exyte in the past, there are always new partners coming into the fray. The remaining one third of new subs undergoes an extensive onboarding and training process to make sure that they all know what is expected of them. “And we cannot complain. We only had a small number of non-conformance reports over the course of the project, and these were promptly dealt with,” Tao says.
Client’s recognition highlights Exyte’s project execution excellence
The client recently recognized Exyte’s efforts by naming the company an "Excellent Partner", acknowledging the high quality and dedication demonstrated throughout the project. "It’s truly an honor to receive such meaningful recognition from our client and end-user. This acknowledgement reflects the unwavering commitment, professionalism, and teamwork our people on the project brought to this endeavor every single day,” Tao remarks.
Further underscoring this achievement, the project also received the Exyte Operational Excellence Award in the category “Quality”. “Winning the Exyte Operational Excellence Award is the cherry on top. It validates our belief that when you lead with quality, success follows," the Project Manager concludes.
