Next-gen high-potency injectables facility in France
Client: CARBOGEN AMCIS
Location: Riom, France
Industry: Pharmaceuticals / Biotechnology
Scope: Engineering, Procurement, Construction Management, Validation (EPCMV)
Project Scale: 9,500 m² facility
Objective
The LabNext project was developed to support BIOMERIEUX’s growing need for advanced biological research and sequencing activities. The new microbiology facility includes BSL2 and BSL3 microbiology laboratories designed for handling OEB3 and OEB4 products. The project integrates state-of-the-art automated systems, providing modular infrastructure for flexible organization and future expansion of sequencing operations.
The challenge
The project faced several key challenges including:
- Capturing and integrating detailed requirements from 15 specialized work teams
- Coordinating a complex facility design with multiple laboratory containment levels (BSL2 and BSL3)
- Delivering a highly automated and modular laboratory infrastructure with tight spatial and technical constraints
- Managing design and construction phases during a 3-year execution window
The solution
A key factor in the project’s success was working closely with 15 specialized teams from BIOMERIEUX to gather and understand their requirements. In order to manage the project’s complexity and to ensure seamless execution the Exyte team implemented the following strategies:
- State-of-the-art design, automated and designed with the latest technologies
- Integration of a BSL3 development lab
Modular infrastructure allowing for flexible organization and increased sequencing activities
Results
The project was successfully completed over a 3 year period, which led to Exyte being awarded multiple projects. The main milestones:
- Concept Design: May 2020 to the end of 2020
- Basic Design: Feb 2021 to Aug 2021
- Detailed Design: Sep 2021 to Feb 2022
Construction Management: Feb 2022 to Sep 2023
Future outlook & industry impact
The LabNext facility strengthens BIOMERIEUX’s research and diagnostic capabilities in Europe, supporting faster and more efficient biological analysis and sequencing. The project showcases Exyte’s (BLS Exyte*) expertise in delivering complex, high-containment laboratory environments with integrated automation.
