Designing the future as an architect for Exyte
Mary Burns gives insights about her responsibilities and what she likes about working for a global company.
Initially earning a degree in finance, Mary Burns soon realized that her true passion did not lie in the crunching of numbers. “Switching degrees and becoming a licensed architect allowed me to be creative and see the results of my work in a tangible way.”
Currently, Burns actively supports the design efforts of a major semiconductor project in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States, juggling multiple responsibilities. “I'm wearing three hats at the moment so to speak: Architect, design manager, and manager in the architectural studio. It's a unique opportunity to expand my skillset while supporting others in their career growth,“ she reveals.
For her, supporting her team members holds great significance. "It is certainly one of the most fulfilling parts of the job. I think it is important to have mentors from diverse backgrounds. I'm honored to lend my perspective and support, especially as the industry continues to grow and expand.”
“I came back for the people”
Re-joining Exyte after a hiatus of over three years pursuing other opportunities, Burns speaks highly of the international experience she gained during her first stint at Exyte. Living overseas outside of the US, she undertook assignments in Austria and Israel. "It's great that the company has such an international footprint and certainly helped launch my career. I learned new problem-solving methods, gained exposure to different cultures, and worked alongside extraordinary colleagues from all over the world. I can say I came back to Exyte to work with the project team members, some of whom are of the most outstanding partners I have worked with."
Working around the clock with a global team
Mary Burns and her colleagues embrace a global collaborative approach, leveraging their diverse expertise working as design teams across various time zones. She explains, "We're living up to our full potential by working as one design team around the clock, collaborating with our colleagues in Singapore, India, Israel, Germany, Ireland, and throughout the US." At this project stage, she is constantly in touch with the client and her colleagues at Exyte. A role Burns embraces: "In this set-up, communication is key."
Working closely with clients whose products have the potential to reshape the world, she recognizes the company's responsibility to create cutting-edge facilities. She states, “As a service-oriented company, we have a unique opportunity to establish a high industry standard. By partnering with our clients, we can coach them throughout the design and construction process to ensure exceptional results. With the recent transformation of our industry, this is a time where we can step up and be seen for our design excellence.”
